Holiday In Egypt
Egypt Holiday
As you begin packing for your trip to Egypt, there are a number of essential
items that you want to take with you in order to have a truly successful visit.
Below is a list of some of the most important items you will need, though might
not have thought of yourself.
Cash
While most westernized countries rely heavily on the use of credit or debit
cards for everyday transactions, Egypt does not. Though credit cards are getting
used more frequently and a few ATM’s have sprung up, this country still relies
heavily on hard currency, even with very large purchases such as a car. If you
only bring credit or debit cards with the hope of getting money at an ATM, you
may end up with no money at all! Even checks are not widely accepted and though
Travelers checks will be accepted at banks, most vendors will not take them.
Plan ahead and arrange to exchange your money before your trip so you don’t end
up stranded somewhere.
Sweater
Despite the fact that Egypt is mostly desert, believe it or not, it does get
cold here, especially at night. A desert climate tends to be extremely dry and
hot during the day but very cold at night so don’t forget to pack a few warm
clothes for the evening. Nothing could be worse than going to Egypt expecting to
get a tan and instead getting frostbite. Don’t go overboard, you probably won’t
need your wool socks, but a sweater and some long pants are a must.
Visa
In order to get into Egypt you must have a tourist VISA. Unlike a lot of other
countries, this is not very difficult to obtain and you can actually acquire one
at the airport once you arrive and before you go through customs. There is a
bank in the airport that will not only change your money for you but also give
you a VISA for about 10 U.S. dollars, don’t forget to do this or you will not
get through customs! A passport is also essential, as you can neither leave your
home country nor enter into another without it.
Adapter
Egypt is on a different electricity output than either the United States or
Europe. While you can obtain different plugs covers that will allow your plug to
fit into the wall, this does not change the voltage and you could ruin whatever
appliance you are trying to plug in, including your computer! If you have to
bring an electrical appliance with you, inquire about an adapter at your hotel
or through your travel agency, do not attempt to plug your appliance in or you
could cause a fire.
Sunscreen
The weather in Egypt can get over 100 degrees Fahrenheit but often it feels
cooler because it is a dry heat and there is little humidity. Don’t let this
fool you! Make sure to drink lots of water on your trip and to always wear
sunscreen, even on days that feel cool.
International Calling Card
Calling into and out of Egypt can be tricky. Often it is hard to get an outside
line and you may need to try dialing a couple of times before getting a good
connection. It is a good idea to have an international calling card on hand so
that you only need to dial the toll free number in order to get a line out of
the country in the case of an emergency. Your travel company or your hotel can
also help you with this. Remember, unless you have a world wide satellite phone,
your cell phone will not work in this country.
